This application reveals a methodology for making a preserved composite woodproduct from wood infested with a fungus associated with a bark beetle, andthepreserved composite wood product produced thereby. In one embodiment, themethod involves profiling lumber to remove a portion of fungus infested woodorbark, leaving a profiled board having a bonding surface comprising a remainingportion of fungus infested wood, treating the profiled board with a liquidcomprisinga lumber additive, so that the board absorbs the liquid and the remainingportion ofthe fungus infested wood on the bonding surface acquires a retainedconcentrationof the lumber additive, to form a treated board, and joining the bondingsurface toone or more pieces of wood along a longitudinal junction, to form a compositewoodproduct that has an interior and an exterior, so that an interior segment ofthelongitudinal junction is formed by the remaining portion of the fungusinfested woodon the bonding surface located in the interior of the composite wood product,wherein the retained concentration of the lumber additive in the interiorsegment isat least as high as the concentration of the lumber additive at any point ontheexterior of the composite wood product.
