The invention relates to thermally sprayed Al2O3 layers having a high contentof corundum without any property-reducingadditives, and to a method for the production of said layers. The inventionmay be utilized particularly in the field ofelectrical insulation, as a dielectric, and as protection from wear. Accordingto the invention, the thermally sprayed Al2O3 layersare characterized in that they have a porosity of no more than 19%, and a highcontent of -Al2O3 a(content of corundum) of atleast 72% by volume. The layers have a specific electrical resistance of 1.cndot. 10 12 Ohms .cndot. cm, and a purity of 97%. The productionaccording to the invention of said layers is carried out utilizing aqueous oralcoholic suspensions made from pure -Al2O3, havinga grain size of 100 nm by means of a method from the group of thermalspraying.
