An example method of cementing in a subterranean formation includesdetermining a settable composition for usein the subterranean formation; calculating a total carbon footprint of thesettable composition; determining at least one additive foruse in the settable composition, wherein the additive replaces at least aportion of the settable composition and reduces the totalcarbon footprint of the settable composition; preparing the settablecomposition comprising the additive; placing the settablecomposition comprising the additive in the subterranean formation; andallowing the settable composition comprising the additive toset in the subterranean formation. Additional embodiments of the presentinvention include determining an amount of reduction inthe carbon footprint of the settable composition; and/or communicating theamount of reduction in the carbon footprint of thesettable composition to a customer or end user.
