The separation of particles in or from liquids is a necessary step in many methods used in biotechnology, biological research, diagnostics and the treatment of diseases. Usually, methods are employed that exploit density differences in (sedimentation) or the size of the particles (filtration). The invention relates to a device that is suitable for concentrating particles from liquids by means of a freely movable assembly comprising a separation membrane and a piston inside a cylinder and to the use of said device. The device is suitable for an application with no time restrictions in a closed circuit. The invention also relates to a method for the preferably continuous separation of particles. The invention relates in particular to a device for separating particles from liquids, comprising or consisting of a cylinder (1), in which at least one filter disc (2), which is permanently fixed to a filter ram (3), and a piston disc (4) are movably mounted, allowing at least one filter disc (2) to be moved together with the piston disc (4) and the filter disc (2) to be moved individually through the cylinder (1) by means of the filter ram (3). The cylinder (1) is sealed at the end facing the filter disc or discs (2) and is provided with at least one inlet and outlet valve (5) and seals (6) for the filter disc or discs (2) and the piston disc (4).
