A library device for conveying a storage medium by moving a cell unit is provided. The library device has a housing provided with an opening, the cell unit provided with a plurality of cells for storing the storage medium, a drive unit for writing data and reading out the data to and from the storage medium, a medium conveying section for accessing and transferring the storage medium between the cells and between the cells and the drive unit, a cell unit drive section for moving the cell unit in the up and down direction, and a control unit for allowing the cell unit drive section to move the cell unit to a position accessible by the medium conveying sections of other library devices stacked in the vertical direction through the opening.
