A method of maintaining a rod 24 of a hydraulic cylinder 26 for a motion compensation system of an offshore platform includes non-destructive testing of a metallic cladding 22 deposited onto the rod 24. An inspection crawler 30 includes a visual inspection device 34, an eddy current inspection device 38 and an ultrasonic inspection device 42. The method includes rotating the visual inspection device 34, the eddy current inspection device 38 and the ultrasonic inspection device 42 around a circumference of the rod 24 while moving the inspection crawler 30 along a longitudinal axis 32 of the rod 24 to simultaneously collect data related to the metallic cladding 22 from the visual inspection device 34, the eddy current inspection device 38 and the ultrasonic inspection device 42. The data is analyzed to detect any discontinuities, i.e., defects, in the metallic cladding 22.
