Disclosed is a novel variable lymphocyte receptor (VLR) which can recognize an antigen that cannot be recognized by known molecules VLRA and VLRB.  Also disclosed is a method for screening for a phage capable of binding to a target antigen, which utilizes the VLR. The VLR comprises one LRRNT, one LRRCT, and at least one LRR arranged between the LRRNT and the LRRCT, wherein the LRRCT has a motif comprising either the amino acid sequence (a) and/or the amino acid sequence (b) shown below. (a) Val-Lys-X1-Val-Asn-(X8)-Cys (b) Val-Lys-X1-Val-X1-Thr-(X7)-Cys  (In the formulae (a) and (b), X represents an amino acid residue; and Xn represents an amino acid sequence composed of n amino acid residues Xs which are the same as or different from each other, wherein n represents a natural number.)
