The invention relates to the application of a liquid to the bottom (2) of a thermoplastic container (1) moved such that the bottom follows a path (T) with a constant slope above a tank (4) containing the liquid (3); at one end of the tank, at least one jet (5) of liquid is sprayed upwards at an angle, forming a wall (6) of liquid capable of raising the level (N) of the liquid in the tank; a leakage (F) of liquid is created in the tank with a flow rate equal to the flow rate of the jet; and the path of the bottom is such that the bottom crosses the wall (6) of liquid and, for a predetermined time, passes through the liquid held in the tank. The invention can be used for cooling the hot bottoms of containers after blow moulding.
