Correlations are determined at first between a damage depth and the ratio, which is taken between a temperature difference of between the maximum temperature and the minimum temperature in the temperature distribution of the surface at a portion containing damage, and a temperature gradient in the temperature distribution. Next, the temperature distribution of the surface at such a portion of the structure as contains the damage is measured. If the temperature distribution of the structure surface is determined, the temperature distribution between the two points containing the damaged portion is noted to determine the temperature difference between the maximum temperature and the minimum temperature from the temperature distribution, and to determine the temperature gradient of the section indicating a predetermined or higher temperature fluctuation. Moreover, the ratio between the temperature difference and the temperature gradient thus determined is calculated, and the damage depth corresponding to the ratio is decided by using the correlations determined at first. The damage depth can be estimated by the aforementioned operations.
