The invention relates to a perming method which allows "young-looking" and modern hairstyles to last longer than with conventional styling means and which dispenses with the need for conventional mechanical aids such as curlers or bendy rollers during the perming process. Instead, the perming agent is more viscous, providing the manually created hairstyle with stability. Corresponding perming agents contain 1 to 30 percent by weight of keratin-reducing substance(s) in a cosmetically acceptable carrier, the percentage being relative to the weight of the perming agent that has a viscosity (Brookfield RTV, spindle No. 4, speed 20 rpm) of ≥ 15 Pas in normal conditions (20°C, 1013.25 mbar).
