The system has a drive train provided with an internal combustion engine and an automatic transmission. The drive train exhibits a hybrid unit e.g. power recovery unit, with a hybrid drive element e.g. electrical machine, and an energy storage e.g. capacitor, where the hybrid drive element is operated as a generator and a motor. A control unit operates the internal combustion engine together with the hybrid unit in pre-determined target operating point, independent of abrupt varying of power requirement at the drive train. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a drive system of a commercial motor vehicle.
