The invention relates to a method of processing data packets in a communications network supporting a plurality of levels of importance and of classes of service. The method comprises the following steps; receiving data packets each having a chosen level of importance and a chosen class of service; providing a plurality of queues (Q1 to Q6) each dedicated to a chosen level of importance; each queue (Q) possessing a plurality of storage areas (Zij) each dedicated to a chosen class of service; storing the current data packet in the storage area (Zij) corresponding to the class of service of said data packet thus processed and belonging to the queue (Q) of corresponding level of importance; and for each data packet thus stored, applying a processing algorithm dependent on the level of importance and the class of service of said packet.
