The present invention relates to the use of a protein comprising glycoprotein 130 (gp130) and/or leukemia inhibitory factor receptor alpha-chain (LIFRα) for the identification of a cytoprotective compound. Other aspects of the invention relates to a method of screening for a potential cytoprotective compound using the protein.
