PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display device and a driving method thereof are provided to reduce power consumption by turning off optical source blocks corresponding to the still image region and turning on the optical source blocks of a backlight unit corresponding to a moving picture region in an interior mode.;CONSTITUTION: A backlight unit(17) is separately driven with an optical source block unit and irradiates the light to a liquid crystal display panel. An image process circuit(14) detects the movement determination signal of the display image according to the region in the liquid crystal display panel by referring to the input digital video data and a timing signal when the interior mode selection signal is inputted. A backlight controller(15) generates the optical source driving control signal. The optical source driving control signal drives the optical source blocks corresponding to the moving picture display region and the optical source blocks corresponding to the still image display region based on the movement determination signal of the display image differently. The plurality of optical source driving units drive the optical source blocks independently in response to the optical source driving control signal.;COPYRIGHT KIPO 2010
