PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for estimating noise variance in wireless multi-carrier communication systems are provided to reduce the complexity of implementation by presuming the noise variance based on the second noise variance through the frequency area signal difference sample. CONSTITUTION: A receiver(101) receives the carrier signal including the reference signal sequence of the multiple transmitting antenna. A first noise variance extracting unit(103) calculates the first noise variance of the time domain about the received carrier signal as described above. The second noise variance extracting unit(109) calculates the second noise variance of the frequency domain about the received carrier signal as described above. The noise variance selecting unit(115) selects the first or the second noise variance. The first noise variance extracting unit comprises a first dispersion calculator obtaining the dispersion of signal difference samples of the first sample extraction unit calculating the signal difference sample of domain in the time-frequency assignment and RX-antenna of the received carrier signal as described above.
