PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for determining a media codec in an SIP(Session Initiation Protocol) based VoIP network are provided to determine a codec according to a codec priority by transmitting an SDP(Session Description Protocol) provision message through the addition of an identifier which allows the priority for setting codec.;CONSTITUTION: An SIP for which a priority for media codec determination is given is determined(504). The information of an SIP entity having the priority for determining the media codec determination is described(508).
