PURPOSE: A rainfall estimation method of a weather radar is provided to improve the reliability of rainfall estimation with fast and real-time prediction capabilities by minimizing the errors of radar reflectivity and to prevent damage due to localized heavy rain. CONSTITUTION: A rainfall estimation method of weather radar comprises the following steps: converting radar data of polar coordinates as a three-dimensional rectangular coordinate system; setting the reflectivity of a disdrometer as a standard value in the rectangular coordinate system and identifying radar reflectivity which is located within a constant radius from the disdrometer; identifying an altitude which minimizes the difference of the reflectivity of the disdrometer and the radar reflectivity; calculating the ratio of the radar reflectivity to the reflectivity of the disdrometer(a bias correction factor); and producing the rainfall estimation using a Z-R relation equation after correcting the radar reflectivity. The Z-R equation is Z=aR^b. In the equation, Z is a factor of radar reflectivity.
