The electromagnet has a movable armature (12) to carry out successive or simultaneous movements of rotation and translation under the effect of magnetic field generated by an electric current pulse in a coil (14). The movable armature has a piece (20) and levers (24, 26) that are rotated around an axis and are pivotably mounted on a frame. A U-shaped fixed armature (10) has a part (16) engaged in the coil, and another part (18) partially enclosing the coil. Each lever is arranged such that its center of gravity is found on its corresponding pivoting axis. An independent claim is also included for a lock comprising an electromagnet.
