The method involves issuing a storage unit with a digital authenticity certificate comprising digitally signed information representative of a unique characteristic i.e. series number, of a physical object. The validity of the digital authenticity certificate is verified using network computing units, where the computing units cooperate with the storage unit and a validation authority and/or certification authority to provide a validity state of the certificate in real time. The validity state of the certificate is modified. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program unit comprising instructions for implementing a digital certification method (2) a storage unit for implementing the digital certification method.
