The device has a turning device (9) with a cylindrical pin mounted on a needle bar (5) of a sewing machine, where the pin is set into oscillating vertical motion by the needle bar. A cutting needle holder is supported on the pin, so that the needle holder rotates about a rotational axis. A cutting needle (23) is secured in the cutting needle holder. A supporting washer is formed on the pin for specifying axial position of the needle holder, and alignment elements are formed on the washer. The needle holder is moved and lockable at predetermined rotational angle positions. An independent claim is also included for a method for cutting a textile or non-textile sheet material along a specified cutting line.
