The roller (1) has a drive including a multi-phase coil arrangement with phase coils (8-10) arranged in a circumferential direction successively in a pre-determined extent angle region, where the coils have thin pipes. A roller body (2) e.g. short circuited rotor, is electrically and conductively formed at region of surface. The arrangement is attached to a multi-phase frequency converter (11) whose frequency is adjustable. A speed sensor (14) determines number of revolutions of the body, and is connected with the converter.
