The device (9) has two application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) (3, 4) for operating respective front and rear ultrasound sensors (1, 2). A sensor independent control unit (7) is coupled with the integrated circuits by a sensor independent interface (6). A multiplexer (5) allows either the integrated circuit (3) or the integrated circuit (4) to be selectively coupled with the interface. A third ASIC is provided such that real-time signal processing takes place for controlling the sensors. A processor executes sensor independent software.
