Preparing fuel additive from glycerin, comprises: (a) reacting glycerin with hydrogen in the presence of a heterogeneous catalyst to form an intermediate product comprising 1,2-propanediol, in a first reaction zone; and (b) further converting the intermediate product to fuel additive comprising 1-propanol, 2-propanol and/or ethanol in the presence of a heterogeneous catalyst in a second reaction zone.
