The method involves measuring a time in a calibration step, which requires an ultrasonic pulse from an ultrasonic transmitter (11) along the ultrasonic path of the geometrical length to the ultrasonic receiver (12). Another time is measured in another calibration step, which requires an ultrasonic pulse from the ultrasonic transmitter under reflection at the ultrasonic receiver and at the ultrasonic transmitter on a path of certain length to ultrasonic receiver. An evaluation unit-related delay is determined from the measured times by the ultrasonic transmitter or the ultrasonic receiver.
