The heat exchanger comprises a bundle of tubes which is inserted in a tubular housing (11). The exhaust gas flows from an inlet (4) to an outlet (6), where a coolant channel is arranged between the tubes. The coolant is a liquid in one group (F) and a gas in another group (G), where the length (L) of the liquid group is smaller than 25 percent of the length of the gas group. The length of the liquid group is equal to 1 percent to 10 percent of the length of the gas group.
