The method involves extracting a set of characteristics e.g. rear edge (6), based on data related to detection of loading or unloading areas of a crane, for determining vehicle position. Another set of characteristics is extracted based on the data. The number of characteristics contained in an individual vehicle model for describing a vehicle type is determined. The vehicle type is determined by selecting a vehicle model with maximum number of corresponding characteristics. The position is re-estimated based on the corresponding characteristics.
