The device has a gas bag (3), and a gas generator (2) provided for filling the gasbag with expansion gas. The gas bag has upper and lower clamp arrangements (32, 31) that stay in flow-connection with one another, and the gas generator passes the expansion gas into the clamp arrangements, where the upper arrangement has a smaller volume than the lower arrangement. A one-way valve (5) arranged between the clamp arrangements permits the flow of the expansion gas into the upper arrangement and blocks reverse flow of the expansion gas from the upper arrangement to the lower arrangement.
