The system has a robot (6) e.g. articulated robot, for moving a coil arrangement (4) for transcranial magnetic stimulation relative to a head (2) of a patient. An indicator (20) is provided with indicator markings (22) whose position is determined by a three dimensional camera system (8). A control device (10) i.e. computer, determines the position of the indicator relative to the head based on the determined position of the indicator markings. The robot is controlled by the control device such that the robot moves the coil arrangement to the determined position of the indicator. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a magnetic stimulation system (2) a positioning method for positioning a coil arrangement relative to a head of a patient for transcranial magnetic stimulation.
