The invention relates to a method for controlling the flow velocity and for braking of melt streams by means of magnetic fields, in particular when tapping of metallurgical vessels, such as blast furnaces and melting furnaces. The method is characterized in that the stream of melt in a closed guide element by at least two in the direction of flow of the melt is arranged in a row one behind the magnetic fields with a constant, is directed opposite polarity, in such a way that the magnetic field lines the molten stream transversely over its entire cross section and of the magnetic fields penetrate into the melt flow voltages are induced in the opposite direction through which, in the melt flow at least three, located one behind the eddy current fields are generated and that by means of the cooperation of the magnetic fields and eddy currents forces are generated, by which the flow velocity of the melt stream can be reduced.
