The method involves monitoring an injection rate control (210) that regulates a fuel amount injected during an injection process for determining whether a measure correcting an injection rate is planned and/or executed for locking an injector (100). The injection rate control is monitored through a comparison of an actual electrical control time point with a standard control time point, and an error response is activated when the changing of temporal characteristics of the injector and/or a valve needle (116) fulfills predetermined criteria. An independent claim is also included for a controlling system for operating an injector of a fuel injection system of an internal combustion engine.
