The method involves detecting information regarding position of an armature relative to a magnetic coil, based on inductance of the magnetic coil. A measurement pulse is applied to the magnetic coil, for measuring the inductance. Electrical operating parameters of an electromagnetic actuator are evaluated to close the inductance. The parameters are changed by the measurement pulse. The armature operates together with the magnetic coil. The measurement pulse is realized such that current flowing through the magnetic coil is changed. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating an electromagnetic actuator.
