The condensation dryer (1) has a drum chamber (3) for drying the articles, a processing air channel (2), a control unit (10) and mediums for detecting a forthcoming cleaning requirement for a heat exchanger (5). A heater (4) for heating the processing air, the heat exchanger for cooling the processing air and a blower (6) for carrying the processing air are provided in the processing air channel. A counter (11) is provided as the medium for detecting the forthcoming cleaning requirement. An independent claim is included for a method for operating a condensation dryer.
