The device (10) has a fuel tank positioned in a casing (12), and a storage tank (14) integrated into the casing for storing a fire-restraining substance. The substance stored in the storage tank releases a gaseous fire-restraining component while increasing temperature or pressure in the storage tank, where the substance releasing fire-restraining component is solid, liquid carbon dioxide or liquid nitrogen and/or hydrogen carbonate, triazine or azide. A sensor detects combustible gases and/or temperature. An independent claim is also included for a method for fire avoidance with a device for producing or storing of electrical or mechanical energy.
