The method involves arranging two measuring planes (5, 7) of a measuring channel (1) with each other transverse to flow direction (8). Geometrical expansion of particles (3) e.g. metal particles, in the flow direction is determined from speed and duration of the deviation of measuring signals in the measuring planes using a base signal. The geometrical expansion of the particles is determined transverse to the flow direction as a function of the change of the measuring signals in the measuring planes. An independent claim is also included for a device for measuring speed of particles contained in a fluid stream and the geometrical expansion of the particles in two directions.
