The method involves arranging a measuring probe (12) in an exhaust gas path downstream to a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine (10), where the probe has a measuring sensor corresponding to hydrocarbon. The internal combustion engine is operated in a preset operating condition based on comparison of a signal from the measuring sensor with preset reference ranges. A connection to a controller of the engine is produced, and a temperature and/or exhaust gases of the engine are detected. An independent claim is also included for a testing device for testing leak tightness of a fuel injector of an internal combustion engine.
