The method comprises melting glass in a melting end, pouring the glass melt on a fluid metal bath (5) and then forming to a glass strip (8). The float bath apparatus comprises a float bath base (2) from bath base stones (3) and a metal cover with a metal base wall (14). Between the bath base stone and the metal base wall, an intermediate area is formed, which is filled in an area with hydrogen-containing gas. A pre-determined composition of the gas in the intermediate area is adjusted or maintained by the supply of component of gases. The method comprises melting glass in a melting end, pouring the glass melt on a fluid metal bath (5) and then forming to a glass strip (8). The float bath apparatus comprises a float bath base (2) from bath base stones (3) and a metal cover with a metal base wall (14). Between the bath base stone and the metal base wall, an intermediate area is formed, which is filled in an area with hydrogen-containing gas. A pre-determined composition of the gas in the intermediate area is adjusted or maintained by the supply of component of gases. The composition of the gas present in the intermediate area is measured. The area comprises a float bath section. The forming gas consists of 12-14 % of hydrogen. The gas is initiated into the area above the metal bath. The gas is supplied and taken away to a place of the metal base wall. An independent claim is included for a float bath apparatus.
