A catalytically active coating comprises multiple different zones, where the former zone is oxidation zone for nitrogenous compounds. The latter zone is storage zone for nitrogen oxide molecules and the third zone is a comproportionation zone of ammonia and nitrogen oxide molecules. The fourth zone is a reduction zone for nitrogen oxide molecules. An independent claim is included for a method for treating internal-combustion engine exhaust gases, which involves passing exhaust gas through catalytically active coating.
