The engine (11) has an exhaust gas tract (16) provided with an exhaust gas strand (15) for guiding an exhaust gas stream. A particle filter (20) is activated in the exhaust gas stream in operating phases of the engine with critical particle emission. The particle filter is arranged in a bypass (21), which bridges a strand section (151) to the exhaust gas strand. A controllable blocking element (22) e.g. switching valve, partially blocks the exhaust gas stream, where controlling of the blocking element is carried out dependent on the control variables e.g. temperature of the engine.
