The method involves transmitting a clock signal (16) and an input signal (22) from an electronic unit (10) to another electronic unit (12), where the input signal is synchronized with the clock signal. A response sequence in an output signal (26) produced by the input signal is transmitted from the latter unit to the former unit. A clear test sequence is produced in the latter unit. The test sequence is transmitted to the former unit before the response sequence such that a temporal sequence between the test and response sequences enables a temporal delay between the units. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an electronic unit comprising a device for producing a test sequence (2) a computer program with a program code for executing a method for performing bi-directional communication between electronic units (3) a computer program product with a program code for executing a method for performing bi-directional communication between electronic units.
