The method involves detecting a process of a cylinder pressure in a cylinder (1) of a combustion engine. A differential heating process is calculated on the base of the detected process of the cylinder pressure. The combustion characteristic is calculated with multiple different polytropic exponents. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a device for determining combustion characteristic; and (2) a computer program with program code.
