The appliance has a capacitor core part (104) for supplying energy to a controller (102) in a standby operation. The controller monitors a main switch (109) i.e. semiconductor switch, and is temporarily operated in an energy-saving mode in the standby operation. The capacitor core part is connected with a supply voltage (L-Pol, N-Pol), and the controller is changed from the standby operation to an active operation during activation of the main switch. The controller activates a switching power supply (110) for the supply of the appliance, and controls a standby relay (105). An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a household appliance.
