The method involves providing a control- and regulating unit (13) for controlling a tempering device (10). A tempering liquid is directly or indirectly identified by a medium-detecting sensor (23), and the tempering device is controlled in dependence of a type of the identified liquid. A capacity of a capacitor, which is dipped in the liquid, is determined, and the type of the liquid is determined from a database in dependence of the determined capacity. An upper and/or lower temperature limit value is determined in dependence of the type of the liquid. An independent claim is also included for a tempering device for tempering a material sample.
