The lighting unit (L) has a carrier (2) for an LED (3), and a bell or cap (1) arranged above the LED, where the bell or cap is translucent in regions. The carrier includes a contact surface (2e) at a backside for contacting walls (2c, 2d) at a radiator box. The LED is arranged at the walls, and the bell or cap is formed of a white or colored material i.e. polypropylene. The carrier is arranged in place of a body of a street gas light. The bell or cap includes a rough surface (1b) for obtaining glare-free light. An independent claim is also included for a light with a lighting unit.
