Systems and methods of limiting contact penetration in a numerical simulation of a nonlinear response of a structure using finite element analysis are described. In one aspect, a finite element analysis (FEA) model of a structure is defined as a number of nodes and elements based on the geometry and material properties of the structure. A timely analysis of the FEA model is then performed. The results of the temporally progressive analysis contain a number of solutions of a non-linear structural response at the respective time steps. The solutions at each time step requires at least one iteration for their calculation. The nonlinear structure response is determined in the following manner: 1) determining a search direction; 2) calculating a contact intrusion parameter in the search direction; and 3) finding a location of minimum energy imbalance along the search direction as a solution that is further restricted by the CPP so that the contact penetration of the structure is substantially limited.
