The engine (1000) has a fluid conduit (400) by which two volumes (100, 200) are interconnected. A machine (300) operated using working medium (10) e.g. helium, water vapor and organic rankine cycle medium, is connected to the fluid conduit between the volumes. The engine is designed such that the medium is heated in one volume while cooling the medium in the other volume in a state, and the medium is cooled in the former volume while heating the medium in the latter volume in another state. Coolant is provided in cold areas of the respective volumes. A displacing piston made of plastic i.e. PTFE, or wood, is movably arranged between cold and hot areas of the respective volumes. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for operating a heat engine (2) a method for utilization of waste gas.
