The device (1) has an interface (2) for communication with a computer (3), where the computer includes a compatible interface (4). A data storage unit (7) e.g. electrically EPROM, is used for data exchange between the computer and the device. A proof of authenticity of data e.g. electronic signature, is computed by using cryptographic key materials from a key memory (6) and is stored in the data storage unit. Electrical energy required for the computation is applied from an energy storage unit (9) e.g. replaceable coin cell battery, or by an energy source that is independent of the computer.
