The method involves determining acoustic signals i.e. gear noises, at two areas, which are assigned to a component i.e. planetary gear, and converting the acoustic signals into vectors. The acoustic signals are digitized and processed in an evaluation unit by an analog differential amplifier. A condition of the component is interpreted from changes and rotation of the vectors. The signals are represented as impact sound signals and an ambient signal. Ambient noises are adaptively or non-adaptively filtered from the sound signals by the ambient signal. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining a condition of a component in a component assembly.
