The synchronous machine comprises conductive exciting field coils (2). A secondary coil (5) is provided for supply of the exciting field coils. The secondary coil is coupled to a primary coil (4) in an inductive manner. The exciting field coils are oriented such that the magnetic field produced by the exciting field coils is directed in the radial direction. The exciting field coils are arranged on a rotor shaft (6) of the synchronous machine. An independent claim is included for a method for operating a synchronous machine.
