The method comprises constructing a test structure on a workpiece (5) in two different directions by using a powder deposition welding with same permanent deposition parameters and without a relative rotation between a powder supply nozzle (4) and a laser beam (2), measuring the heights (H) and/or wall thicknesses (D) of the test structure constructed in the different directions, and determining the direction of the misadjustment of the powder supply nozzle relative to the laser beam based on the differences of the heights and/or wall thicknesses measured in the different directions. The method comprises constructing a test structure on a workpiece (5) in two different directions by using a powder deposition welding with same permanent deposition parameters and without a relative rotation between a powder supply nozzle (4) and a laser beam (2), measuring the heights (H) and/or wall thicknesses (D) of the test structure constructed in the different directions, and determining the direction of the misadjustment of the powder supply nozzle relative to the laser beam based on the differences of the heights and/or wall thicknesses measured in the different directions. The heights of the constructed test structure are measured in the different directions by using a light-section method. Circular or elliptical walls are built as test structure on the workpiece and extend in the different directions. The direction of a required adjustment of the powder supply nozzle is selected relative to the laser beam on the basis of the differences of the heights and/or wall thicknesses measured in the different directions. The powder supply nozzle is adjusted relative to the laser beam in one of the different directions, in which the maximum height (H m a x) of the constructed test structure is measured. The adjustment of the powder supply nozzle automatically takes place relative to the laser beam on the basis of the measured heights and/or wall thicknesses. Independent claims are included for: (1) a machine for laser processing a workpiece using a laser beam; and (2) a computer product.
