The method involves increasing the air mass flow in a combustion chamber of a cylinder by a charging device. A spark-ignition internal combustion is operated in a lean-mixture operation (SCH) with a combustion mixture. The charge increases during the lean-mixture operation, where the fuel is passed in the combustion chamber of the cylinder at a fuel limit value (2a) and shifted in a homogeneous operation (HO).
